MAURICE LUCAS GOLF TOURNAMENT - PORTLAND, OREGON
The Northwest part of the USA is known for all the lovely trees and beautiful outdoor terrain up and down the Pacific Coast. I was being set up to meet up with NBA legend and executive KiKi Vandeweghe at the tournament as he was a teammate of Maurice Lucas on the Portland Trailblazers, so I went up to 3 days to check things out.
Maurice Lucas for # 20 for the Portland Trailblazers, and he was known as a hard nosed enforcer who nobody tested or played around with. Lucas would be just as quick to hit you in the nose with a right hook as he would to be to hit you with a hook shot! The NBA was a tough league to play in during his era, and he was known as one of the toughest.
His sons have now taken over his foundation, and in his memory, they do the golf tournament to raise money for community service. I thought it would be a great way to build a relationship in that area.
WE played the tournament at the Vineyards course in Lake Osweego. I always love a freshly manicured course, with beautiful flowers to accent the campus on the drive in.
I was paired with a good group in the scramble. We shot 7 under in the tournament, but of course that won't be good enough to win in a 4 man scramble. I hit lots of good shots for the team, and had some good laughs with the guys.
The post tournament meal was delicious. The food is just as important as the golf, especially when the golf is over and all that's left is your growling stomach. This is when I found out that Kiki Vandgeweghe didn't make it out to the tournament. I understand as he is an extremely busy NBA executive dealing with a lot of moving pieces. A handshake is always ideal, but a phone call still works just fine.
