LAKE CHABOT AND CHUCK CORICA - SAN FRANCISCO
|

San Francisco has become a midpoint back to Houston on my way back from Beijing or Shanghai over the years. I've become familiar with the Bay Area, hosting groups from China or arranging other events out that way. I had even rented some clubs a couple of times and play at Metro Links golf by the Oakland airport, and love going to Lincoln Park in San Fran with all the lovely views of the Golden Gate bridge.
This time, it was all about golf for 2 days. My good gold partner Allen wanted to test his game on some new tracts, so we hit up our buddy Frank Li in Oakland and he set us 2 rounds for us.
The first day, we went to Lake Chabot, which is right near the Oakland Zoo. This is a track with lots of hills and elevation changes. There is one blind shot on a par 3 that drops down the cliff. You can't really see the green, you just have to hit your shot and trust your distance. Surprisingly, we were all pretty much around the green on that hole.

Lake Chabot has that thick rough, and if you miss the fairway, you'll be hacking out of some touch grass. I was a little sore after that round, the ups and downs of the hills, etc. I managed 7 pars on the course, and hit all the par 3 greens in regulation.
The next day, we rolled over to Chuck Corica, which is more of an open, links style course. The fairways always look wider, so it always makes me want to crank back the driver and let loose my inner John Daly. I must confess, I often hear his famous phrase "grip it and rip it" in my head when I have my driver in hand.
We all had a decent round that day. The Bay area blessed us with good weather those two days, so who could complain about that? I forgot to mention earlier we played that 667 yard par 6 at Lake Chabot on hole 18. A long hole that rolls downhill off the drive , and you work the ball back up the hill to get to the green. Its a very difficult hole to even par in my opinion, but still its fun when you're out on the road experiencing a new course.
